A 1960s Cartier 18ct yellow gold novelty bear brooch, designed as a bear wearing a neckerchief, set with a sapphire cabochon eye with surrounding eight-cut diamonds and a ruby cabochon nose, one ear stamped

'S CARTIER', the other stamped 'L86?6' (rubbed), hallmarked London import for 1964, with makers mark JC, brooch measures approx. 3.5x2.5cm. PROVENANCE: A gift to the vendor from the personal collection of Lady Diana Delamere, (1913-1987, formerly Diana Caldwell), a socialite of the 1930s/40s living in Kenya at the heart of what came to be known as the Happy Valley set. Lady Delamere's life was highly publicised after the murder of her then lover, the Right Honorable Josslyn Hay, 22nd Earl of Erroll, and the trial of her then husband, Sir Jock Delves Broughton. These events were later the subject of James Fox's book 'White Mischief', and dramatised in the 1987 film of the same name, starring Greta Scacchi as Lady Diana and Charles Dance as the Earl of Erroll.
